On January 17, 2023, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) published to the Federal Register a notice and request for comments regarding the Small Unmanned Aircraft Registration System. The FAA intends to request for the Office of Management and Budget to renew the collection of Small Unmanned Aircraft Registrations.
These registrations are part of the broader National Airspace System aircraft registrations. The FAA intends for aircraft registrations to encourage personal accountability. When necessary, the FAA and law enforcement use these registrations to identify an aircraft’s owner and operator to address non-compliance. Registration also facilitates the FAA distributing safety information to registrants.
In addition to the registration requirement, persons intending to operate a Small Unmanned Aircraft must operate either:
(a) in accordance with the exception for limited recreational operations (49 U.S.C. § 44809), 14 C.F.R. Part 107, or 14 C.F.R. Part 91;
(b) in accordance with a waiver issued under 14 C.F.R. Part 107;
(c) in accordance with an exemption issued under 14 C.F.R. Part 11 (including those persons operating under an exemption issued pursuant to 49 U.S.C. § 44807); or
(d) in conjunction with the issuance of a special airworthiness certificate.
The FAA requests that written comments on the proposed information collection should be submitted by February 16, 2023 to www.reginfo.gov/public/do/PRAMain. Such comments may address any aspect of the proposed information collection.
