RTCA to Hold Public Meeting on Performance Standards for Unmanned Aircraft Systems
On July 30th, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00pm, the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) will host a public meeting on the Minimum Performance Standards for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS). The meeting will be held at RTCA’s offices, located at 1150 18th Street NW, Suite 910, Washington, DC 20036.
Recognizing the civil, public and commercial applications of UAS, RTCA is seeking a way to safely integrate UAS systems into non-segregated airspace. In particular, RTCA is focused on establishing a robust Detect and Avoid (DAA) and Command and Control (C2) data link capability for UAS that would allow them to operate safely in non-segregated airspace.
Towards this end, RTCA’s UAS Integration Office is hosting this meeting with major UAS stakeholders and other interested parties to get their input on the development of Minimum Operational Performance Standards (MOPS) for both DAA and the C2 data link. At the moment, RTCA is focused towards creating the MOPS for the operation of civil UAS in Class A airspace under IFR flight rules. Eventually, RTCA plans on creating MOPS for UAS operation in Class D, E and perhaps G airspace.
